Paws & Effect: Greatness Sure Comes in Small Packages

Meet Harvey, the Mighty Havanese

Imagine a world where a loving companion offers unconditional love and life- changing support to those in need. This September, during National Service Dog Month and Deaf Awareness Month, we celebrate the incredible bond between service dogs and their handlers. This bond brings independence, safety, and hope to disabled people. Beth, who lives with hearing loss, now has access to a specially trained service dog like Harvey. For Beth, Harvey is more than a dog; he’s a lifeline, a guardian, and a cherished friend who helps her navigate her everyday life safely and independently.

A woman sitting on an outdoor bench smiles as a fluffy black and white dog with a blue service vest sits next to her, nuzzling her cheek. Sunlit greenery is in the background.

Let’s meet Harvey, an 8-year-old Havanese with a heart as big as his paws are tiny. Harvey isn’t just a pet; he’s Beth’s hearing- alert dog and constant companion. Trained through Atlas, Harvey helps Beth confidently navigate the world with her hearing loss. From alerting her to someone approaching or calling her name, to helping her stay safe in busy environments, Harvey is Beth’s guardian and partner.

His presence brings peace of mind and a renewed sense of independence, showing that even the smallest dogs can make the biggest difference. Their bond is a testament to the transformative power of service dogs and what can be accomplished through positive training.

Beth, with the assistance of Atlas, has trained Harvey to help her navigate safely and confidently with her hearing loss. Despite his small stature, Harvey’s presence is mighty, offering Beth a sense of security and companionship that words alone cannot capture.

Living with severe tinnitus and hearing loss in her right ear, Beth is met with daily obstacles that are often invisible to the outside world.

But with Harvey by her side, she gains a new level of independence and confidence. Harvey’s role is crucial—he alerts Beth to approaching people, especially from behind or the side, helping her stay aware and safe in her environment. Their journey together has been about mastering specific tasks and building an unbreakable bond that transcends the typical pet-owner relationship. As Beth beautifully puts it, “He is my other little human.

This September, during National Service Dog Month and Deaf Awareness Month, we are reminded of the profound difference service dogs make in the lives of their handlers. But behind every successful partnership like Beth and Harvey’s, there’s a community of supporters like you.
